Nankai also uses diesel cars, which is rare for an electric railway. In 1959, when the Kisei Main Line was completed, the diesel semi-express Kinokuni service was opened from Namba and Tennoji to Nanki, and Nankai also purchased new diesel cars, Kiha 5501 and 5551, for use on the line. The livery was cream with red stripes, the color of the JNR semi-express at the time, but was later changed to JNR express colors. At the time, the overall length of the cars was 21.3 meters, making them the longest in Nankai's service.
